PSP In 2009
2008 wasn't a great year for Sony's PSP, with even the company itself admitting that performance and releases had been pretty dismal. There were a couple of standout games released, but on the whole the selection was notably poor. 2009 is looking to be a bit more impressive however, and here we list three games that should really put the PSP back into the forefront;
3: Resistance: Retribution
Resistance Retribution is a continuation of the popular Resistance franchise from the PS3. Converting the FPS format, which has yet to really work well on the PSP, Retribution uses a third person viewpoint instead. The game includes multiplayer functions for upto eight gamers, and utilizes a new function known as PSP Plus, allowing a connection of the PSP to your TV screen and use of a PS3 joypad to play through the game- a welcome nugget of news for those regarding the PSP as inferior medium for shooters. Resistance was wildly popular on the Next gen consoles, and hopefully the PSP will convert that success onto the handheld medium.
#2: Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
At long last, Square Enix's massively popular Kingdom Hearts franchise comes to the PSP with Birth By Sleep. Offering a new trio of heroes, Birth By Sleep is actually a prequel set about a decade before the first Kingdom Hearts. Gameplay looks set to follow the same pattern as earlier titles, with the story shifting and interchanging between the three protaganists. Expect the usual cameos from a mixture of Final Fantasy and Disney characters as you travel throughout the Disney Planets. If you're a fan of the series, this looks set to be an essential purchase, and you just know Square Enix will be pouring class and style into it.
#1: Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Square Enix tops our list again with Dissidia, arguably the most exciting PSP game on the horizon. Think Final Fantasy meets Super smash and you're along the right lines, with characters duelling across various platforms in a wildly enjoyable 3D Beat 'Em Up. Add to this elements of strategy and RPG (characters can level up, unlocking new skills and items) and Dissidia seems like the perfect package. The game features the both the main hero and villain from each Final Fantasy game released so far, with a couple of secret characters aswell, giving rise to a character roster of over 20! It really does go without saying that this title is a must for all fans of Final Fantasy- so join us in willing Autumn to come sooner!
